In incorrectly writing b and d, students begin at the top of the letter, go down to the base line and then circle back up to the right or left, depending on which letter they’re trying to understand that. As each letter is learned, it builds on the techniques used to create the previous letters. In this series, we teach specific hand movements to create the letters. The student builds an understanding of letter differences by relating these letter forms to one another through visual and motor memory. This helps the student to identify reversals and self-correct. This formation series helps to create an association in the student’s visual memory in addition to their motor memory. Verbal cues will also be given as the student is writing; this brings in an auditory stimulus that helps the student understand that the right kind writing formation.
