I could not play at the same playground because the white kids.
I could not go to their schools.
I could not drink from their water fountains.
There were such a lot of things I could not do.

In 1963 Birmingham, Alabama, thousands of African American children volunteered to march for his or her civil rights after hearing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. speak. They protested the laws that kept black other folks separate from white other folks. Facing fear, hate, and danger, these children used their voices to modify the arena. Frank Morrison’s emotive oil-on-canvas paintings bring this historical event to life, even as Monica Clark-Robinson’s moving and poetic words document this remarkable time.
