Description
Unable to deal with the financial ruin because of the Great Depression, Frances’s father has taken his own life. Sad and bewildered, Frances cashes within the railroad ticket that would have carried her to her aunt’s home, trades in her dress for trousers and a cap, and hits the rails as a hobo referred to as Frankie Blue. With Stewpot, any other young hobo, as her guide, Frankie learns to sneak off and on trains, find food, and offer protection to herself. Then Stewpot gets unwell, and Frankie realizes that the truth of life at the rails is far different from her romantic notions.
